Eclectic Formal Living Room Interior Design Project Description
I’ve just moved into a Victorian home with a large foyer and entry covered in period wallpaper. I’d like to preserve the integrity of this, but am at a loss on how to decorate around it! Floor plan

My Living Room I want this room to feel more masculine/feminine/neutral
Neutral What do you currently dislike about the room?
We would like to remove the existing grass cloth wallpaper and paint, as we have cats and they are scratching the wallpaper. Also not crazy about the draperies. What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?
The room is a blank slate! We do have one large piece of artwork that we cannot fit into our existing decor anywhere, as it is modern, that may be able to work in here? Are you open to changing your wall colors?
Yes Do you have a preference for either paint or wall covering, or are you open to both?
Paint Are you open to changing your floor covering?
No Attach a floor plan
Additional comments to designers
Hi! This is a Victorian home, and one of the challenges has been decorating around the very period room features in some places. The two adjacent rooms to this living room are a large foyer (this is shown with the green William Morris wallpaper just so you can get a feel of what I’m talking about), and the dining room (which is shown with the red toile paper). We hope to have this living room be a space that is a bit more modern without clashing with these other spaces. We have thought that maybe adding some French doors onto the pictured foyer opening may give the space some separation. Our vision for this living room is a space that does not have a tv (we have a family room/den for that), where we can be formal enough to have after dinner drinks with guests, but casual enough to have a family night playing board games, reading, or doing a puzzle. We want it to be a wow room, but still livable! We like the idea of a leather sofa maybe and some type of small table set up somewhere for games. I’m REALLY into that slate/colonial blue color everyone is using in their kitchens right now. Additionally, this home is near the beach, so elements of a beach vibe would not be out of place. Also of note we have a baby, two teenagers, and multiple cats and a dog. While well try to keep the cats out (another reason for adding doors), they do scratch and we don’t want to get exorbitantly expensive sofas for this reason. They tend to stay away from low pile fabrics like microfiber suede and velvet, maybe leather. But absolutely no woven fabrics please!
Notes from client: "In the meantime, here are a bunch of photos of the room, surrounding rooms, and the floor plan (labeled “living room”). If I can’t fit them all in this email I’ll send a second. Don’t mind all of the random junk around, it’s just extra pieces of furniture and stuff from our old house which we don’t know what to do with. Additionally, I think I mentioned the wallpaper, which is like a grass cloth, and I don’t hate. But unfortunately we’ve found with cats, it serves as a very large scratching post! Draperies can also go, unless they feel they work somehow. Another thought I had, was perhaps we might want to put glass doors onto the doorway from foyer into this room (like the ones that you can see leading into the sunroom), to give some separation so as not to worry so much about clashing of styles?
The only other thing, is that we have a large piece of art (that I’ll also attach a photo of), from our old house, that really doesn’t go anywhere bc it’s modern, but maybe could be incorporated into the room. Hope this isn’t too many notes!"

Living Room:
Using a dark and rich color will make it feel cozy, warm, and lounge-like.
For your main color, we chose to use blue because it is calming, relaxing, and serene. It is reminiscent of blue skies and deep blue oceans. This color works well to create mood and add impact.
Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish

Sounds good! The prices are for the total quantity (so divide by the number of pieces for the individual cost) The prices reflect the listed price. When you contact our purchasing department, they will let you know if any additional discounts are available. :)
All the Best,
Casey
PS Looking forward to our next project!

I'm so happy that you have enjoyed the design process! I have really enjoyed working with you too! I think you can just reach out to the home office when you set up your next design project and request me and they will match us up. I'll check on this for you and let you know what I find out!
For the shopping list, you will have access to everything indefinitely so you can take your time purchasing items for your new room!
I'm not seeing the photos either...can you reattach them to a message and send them again? Thanks in advance!
All the Best,
Casey

Hope this makes sense. The ones with just the tape measure shown are the alcove windows, showing where I measured from inside. The ones with orange markings are the single window. If you need more, or measurements from a different window, please let me know. Two other questions:
1) once you’ve created the inventory list, how long do we have with it (and with discounts) to purchase? I’d say we couldn’t do everything at once financially, will it be available to us for awhile?
2) if I’ve REALLY liked working with you (and I have!) and would want to work with you again on another project through decorilla, is that possible, or do we have to restart the process all over again for another space?

I hope you are having a great Friday! I pivoted a little bit with the direction of the chairs and rug to go with darker fabrics that infuse a bit more color in this space. What do you think of this iteration? I like the original sideboard in the mix a lot!
All the Best,
Casey

I think I'm all set with measurements except for windows. Can you send me the exact widths and heights of your windows (inside the frame)?
I'm going to re-look the original options and check the materials to make sure everything is kid and pet-friendly.
The blue sideboard. It's not out of the question, especially if you do the chair rail because it will have white behind it....so if you love it, I think we should bring it back into the mix!
Let me see about resourcing the lighter chairs and the rug and I'll circle back with an update ASAP!
Talk to you soon!

My husband is concerned about any white/light colored furniture (the chairs) due to the animals- who hopefully won’t get in there but I’m sure it’ll happen; and kids etc. Also, just to that end, with the pets, we need to choose fabrics that won’t attract them like things that are low pile, and not an obvious woven fabric. I just bought a new rug upstairs, and it’s already getting torn up. SO annoying.
Additionally, the last thing I’m torn about is that gorgeous blue cabinet. I know that would be too much blue but it’s so great. I also liked how it had a little more storage to it in case we wanted to keep games, etc. than this second one.

Sounds good--let me know your thoughts when you both review! Yes, I do think a chair rail with wainscot would really work well in this space. Is that a feasible project for you? If not, we can leave it out, but I think it would work beautifully here!
Talk soon!

I am attaching a revised design iteration showing you a dark blue paint (Benjamin Moore "Gentleman's Gray") as well as a different chair and console option. Let me know what you think!

First of all, THANK YOU for all you are doing for our country. You are a hero for going into the hospitals to work day after day during this pandemic, and I truly appreciate you!
For the dark paint, I think you would be okay to go dark here even with the foyer, since it is a historic home. We would probably need to change out the sideboard and possibly the chairs if we decide to go dark. I will look at some other options and show you an iteration with the dark paint before we move to 3D.
For the design process, I will mainly be providing furniture, paint, and layout instructions, but coordinating local contractors would be something for you to investigate as that falls outside of the scope of Decorilla. For window treatments, I will just need you to send over exact widths and heights for your windows, and I will include the appropriately-sized panels and curtain rods on your shopping list. For the bamboo shades, those will need to be custom, but again, if you send over the measurements for each window, I can include the custom shades on your shopping list.
Please let me know if you have any other questions! I'm going to look around at other chairs and a sideboard that will coordinate with dark paint and send over a design showing those options to you soon.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)
All the Best,
Casey

We are very excited too! After a long day of hospital work covered in head to toe PPE, this was just the pick me up I needed tonight! : )
On first look, we really didn’t have anything that we said “oh, not that!” to. I see the similarities to the photos from the other house I showed you, which I totally appreciate because that’s why I showed you! I love it! But it feels tailored to us. We love the artwork and use of our art as well-it actually made me love it again!
Bouncing around ideas-we are drawn to the idea of having that blue on the walls like you mentioned, but I wanted to talk out a few concerns with you about that...
A) I like that idea, because as I mentioned, we really love that color. I also feel like I am typically drawn to rooms feeling more cozy with a darker color on the wall. We really don’t have a room with bold paint in it and I’m missing that. I think it will make it feel a little more library-esque which I like....
B) that being said, this is running from that foyer with all that wallpaper which is also dark. Do you think it’s going to be too much dark? However, the sunroom is adjoining, so that may lighten it all up a bit. That foyer is a whole other animal, one which I’m sure I’ll will be having decorilla attack someday!
C) how will the existing furniture pieces coordinate with a colored paint? I really love what you selected in terms of the sideboard and those chairs, but that may have to change if it’s too much of one color, no?
Logistically, also wondering if you can just answer a few questions about the process- for example, there is no existing lighting in the room for an overhead fixture. Do you help us to coordinate and find the appropriate people to make that happen, or are we on our own? Likewise with things like measuring for and hanging window treatments?
Really looking forward to working with you and thanks again!

Welcome to Decorilla and thank you so much for sharing this amazing and interesting project with us!
My name is Lidija and I will be one of the designers who will work on your concept design. I was looking at your brief, notes and replies, and thank you so much for sharing all the info, this is so helpful for us to create a place of your dreams :)
That being said, we will need some measurements of your living room. I see your floorplan attached, but numbers are not visible. Could you please share with us numbers in the red circle and wall measurements marked with 1, 2, 3 and 4?
Thank you so much!

Excited to see your ideas. I talked with my husband about your questions, and here are some things we came up with:
1. We actually really struggled with this one for some reason. I think impressive would be one for me, he said spacious, but I say cozy haha. Like I said...we struggled. I think we both have a vision of spending Friday nights with our daughter playing games or having friends over and that being the spot.
2. We both love that blue color, and my husband enthusiastically said he wants blue in this house. So I guess that’s a sure thing! We both dislike yellow and orange.
3. We both really love art and enjoy all kinds. I’d say that painting is actually a bit outside of our normal style, but we gravitated towards the feeling of the “New York apartment” feel-my husband is from Brooklyn. I really enjoy Impressionism and softer pencil type drawings. But, I always have this totally bizarre affinity for portraiture. Like colonial portraits and I think they’re called primitive? Again, probably wouldn’t fit into the scheme but you asked!
4. I’ve always loved how plants fill dead space in a room but neither of us have a particularly green thumb- so maybe faux would be best.
5. I actually don’t have any boards, but during our house hunt, we very nearly bought a house just for the stellar interior design. I was OBSESSED. But we knew that we didn’t have a lifestyle that could support such a nice design, it wasn’t our stuff, and the house just wasn’t big enough. I will upload the photos here. Also this is the exact blue Im talking about. They even have portraiture :) hopefully this all helps and isn’t too conflicting sounding!

Thank you for choosing Decorilla! I’m so excited to work with you on your Victorian living room and provide you with the space you have been envisioning!
After reviewing your project notes, I have a few questions to help us get started:
1. If you could use three words to describe the feeling you would like this space to evoke, what would they be?
2. Any colors you love? Colors to avoid? I know you mentioned loving colonial slate blue, so I'll definitely keep that color in mind!
3. What kind of art styles do you gravitate to for additional pieces outside of your existing piece?
4. Do you like plants? If so, live or faux?
5. Do you have any additional inspiration such as a Pinterest or Houzz board? If not, no worries, I just wanted to check!)
I am available to answer any of your questions about the Decorilla design process and to bounce ideas back and forth about your room.
I will be sharing my initial concept with you in a few days! Talk to you soon!
Best,
Casey
